The history of Dorsett Chapel is a story of pride, endurance and struggle in trying times, but most of all faith in God. We have no written records of our past, but we were blessed to have had members that were and are able to give us accounts of our humble beginning.

Church services were held in a small schoolhouse before the first church was built. Mr. Jim Dorsett gave enough land for a church and school. He stipulated that the church would be of congregational Christian denomination. The name of the church was Dorsett Chapel Congregational Christian Church. The church was of white weather boards, sitting on pillars in 1913. Service was held once a month. Rev. Charlie Williamswas the first minister. Church leaders were Grandmaw Mary Jane Headen, Willis Headen, Lula Headen, Council Headen and June Siler, Sr. Ministers who served at Dorsett Chapel are as follows:

Rev. Charlie Williams

Rev. Meadows

3.

Rev. C.G. Lee

In 1953 under Rev. C.G. Lee's leadership, the Fellowship Hall was built - at that time it was called the hut - and the baptismal pool was built along with new pews were purchased. Brother Arthur Moore was the chairman of these projects and did a lot of the work himself and was proud to say that he did a great job. In 1954, the Lincoln Conference was held at Dorsett Chapel.

10.

Rev. James Milteer - who was a strong leader

Under his leadership, the church were involved in recreation and fellowshipping with churches of Salisbury, Rowan County and the Burlington area.

11.

Rev. Fred Currie (1960-1981)

Rev. Currie served as Pastor for 21 years and seven months. Under his administration, the church worshipped on the first and third Sunday and then on to every Sunday in the month.

The fifth Sunday was Missionary Sunday. On the second day of October 1965, Dorsett Chapel Christian Church merged with the United Church of Christ of the Western Association. In 1966, the church was remodeled which consisted of two bathrooms, siding, heating system and pulpit furniture. Brother Arthur Moore was instrumental in this project as well. On February 1, 1971, Dorsett Chapel became a full-time church. Also in 1971, again the church remodeled; this time it consisted of connecting the church and the fellowship hall, bricking the church, new windows, adding two small rooms at the front and placing a handicap ramp. Brother Phillip Wayne Smith was the building chairman for this project.

12.

Rev. Harold Hart (1982-1983)

13.   Rev. Dr. Larry W. Ellis (1983-2003)

Rev. Larry W. Ellis was sent to us by the Lord in 1983. He served as a faithful and devoted pastor for 19 years and eight months until his health prevented him from continuing his ministry. He departed from this life on August 8, 2003. Under his leadership, the Lord gave him a vision to build a new church. This land was purchased and ground breaking took place on March 8, 1990. We marched from the old church to the new church site. Dedication of the church was held on April 21, 1991. Deacon Clayton Sturdivant was the chairperson for this project. On November 24, 1996, Dorsett Chapel United Church of Christ was blessed to burn the mortgage of their new church. Also under the leadership of Rev. Ellis, the land next door was purchased for additional parking, an organ, piano, new sound system, church van, stained glass windows were added and now a new completed addition to the church. The following organizations were also developed:

*   Starlett & Junior Choir
*   Gospel Choir
*   Male Chorus
*   Clay Anthony Missionaries (Junior Missionaries)
*   DC Yams (Young Adult Missionaries)

As it is written in St. Matthew 16:18, "upon this rock, I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it." If the church is completely full or if there's only a few members present, we will continue to press on and be the church that God would have it to be. A church that is full of faith, spirit, and love.
